A healthier twist on the classic dirt cup dessert, featuring a silky avocado-chocolate pudding layered with crushed cookie ‘dirt’ and gummy worms. This quick, easy, and kid-friendly treat is made with simple ingredients and is surprisingly nutritious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat or 2%)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate wafer cookies (or gluten-free alternative like Glutino)
  • OR 1/2 cup crushed graham crackers mixed with 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 6–8 gummy worms per cup (organic or reduced-sugar recommended)
  • Optional: mint leaves or edible flowers for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a food processor.
  2. Add Greek yogurt, almond milk, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla extract to the food processor. Pulse a few times, then blend for about 30 seconds until smooth. Scrape down the sides.
  3. Add cocoa powder and a pinch of sea salt. Blend for another 30-45 seconds until silky smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness or thickness as needed.
  4. Transfer the pudding to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to thicken.
  5. While the pudding chills, crush the chocolate wafer cookies in a sealed Ziploc bag using a rolling pin until they resemble fine dirt crumbs.
  6. Spoon about 1/4 cup of chilled pudding into each serving cup. Add a layer of crushed cookie crumbs (about 2 tablespoons per cup). Repeat with another layer of pudding and another layer of crumbs, ending with crumbs on top.
  7. Gently poke 2-3 gummy worms into each cup so they appear to be crawling out of the dirt.
  8. Optional: Refrigerate assembled cups for another 15-20 minutes before serving to set the layers. Serve cold.

Notes

Use a ripe avocado for best texture. Chill the pudding for at least 30 minutes to thicken. Add gummy worms just before serving to prevent them from softening. For a vegan version, use coconut yogurt and maple syrup. For a nut-free option, use oat milk or cow’s milk. The pudding can be made up to 2 days in advance and stored in the fridge.
