These festive tie-dye sugar cookies feature vibrant red, white, and blue swirls with a soft and chewy texture, perfect for July 4th and summer parties. Quick and easy to make with simple pantry ingredients and no multi-day prep.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Red gel food coloring
  • Blue gel food coloring
  • Optional: a few drops of clear vanilla or almond extract

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: beat softened butter with granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla: beat in egg and vanilla extract until combined and smooth.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients: gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide and color dough: split dough into three bowls; add red gel food coloring to one, blue to another, and leave one plain; knead each to distribute color.
  6. Create tie-dye effect: scoop small dollops from each colored dough side-by-side on parchment; gently swirl colors with a fork or toothpick without overmixing.
  7. Shape cookies: roll swirled dough into 1-inch balls and place on parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
  8. Chill dough balls: refrigerate baking sheet for 15-20 minutes to prevent spreading and keep colors sharp.
  9. Bake: preheat oven to 350°F (175°C); bake chilled dough balls for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden and centers set but soft.
  10. Cool: let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chill dough balls before baking to prevent spreading and preserve tie-dye colors. Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without affecting dough consistency. Swirl colors gently to avoid muddy patterns. Butter should be softened but not melted for best texture.
