Ingredients

  • Aged cheddar block (orange variety), cut into cubes or shapes
  • Brie wheel, firm, with ghost face carved into rind
  • Smoked gouda, sliced into thin triangles
  • String cheese sticks (mozzarella), peeled for spider web effect
  • Salami (hard variety like Genoa), folded into rose shapes
  • Prosciutto, thinly sliced, draped in wavy ribbons
  • Pepperoni, small slices, with cream cheese dot for eyeballs
  • Black olives, whole pitted, for spider bodies
  • Gummy worms (sour or regular)
  • Pretzel sticks, for spider legs and bones
  • Orange and black candy corn
  • Chocolate cookies (Oreos), whole and crushed for dirt
  • Water crackers, plain round
  • Pita chips, salted
  • Breadsticks, thin crispy
  • Rye crackers, dark color
  • Pumpkin hummus, store-bought or homemade
  • Blackberry jam, seedless
  • Honey, local if possible
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your base: Line a large wooden board with parchment paper. Place small bowls for dips in upper left and lower right corners for balance.
  2. Cut and shape the cheese: Slice aged cheddar into 1-inch cubes. Carve a simple ghost face into brie rind. Cut smoked gouda into thin triangles. Peel string cheese into thin strips, leaving attached at one end for web effect.
  3. Prepare the meats: Fold salami slices into rose shapes by overlapping three slices and rolling. Drape prosciutto in loose ribbons. For pepperoni eyeballs, add a tiny dot of cream cheese in center of each slice.
  4. Create spooky elements: For spiders, place whole black olive on board and insert four small pretzel stick pieces on each side. Stand chocolate cookies upright as tombstones using cream cheese to hold. Crush some Oreos for dirt around tombstones.
  5. Arrange crackers: Place crackers in small clusters around board, grouping similar shapes together near appropriate cheeses and dips.
  6. Add dips and spreads: Spoon pumpkin hummus into one bowl, drizzle blackberry jam into another, pour honey into a third. Place bowls in open spaces.
  7. Scatter garnishes: Sprinkle gummy worms around board. Drop pomegranate seeds in small clusters. Tuck rosemary sprigs between cheese pieces. Lightly dust edible glitter if using.
  8. Final touches: Fill empty spots with extra crackers or candy corn. Ensure spider legs are visible and ghost brie faces outward. Add toothpicks near items needing spearing.

Notes

Take cheese out of fridge 30 minutes before serving for best texture. Assemble board no more than 2 hours before serving to keep crackers crisp. Make olive spiders ahead of time to prevent pretzel legs from breaking. Keep wet and dry items separate to avoid soggy crackers. Double the dips as they go fast.
